‘Inspired by the Peak District’ business Phoenix Adam, based in Bakewell, has come to the rescue of an endangered beetle.
The rare Mire Pill Beetle, also known as the ‘Bog Hog’, is in danger of disappearing from Haxey Grange Fen SSSI in Humberside. Phoenix Adam came to the rescue, with a water level management plan designed to save the tiny insect’s boggy habitat.
Lowland raised bog area has declined dramatically in the past 100 years. The diminutive beetle is a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species, and is classified as endangered.
MD John Ward said:
“This area of lowland bog might not look like much but loss of natural habitats and therefore biodiversity represents a direct threat to human health and well-being.
Who knows, the biochemicals made by this tiny beetle could lead scientists to a cure for any number of human diseases, including cancer and heart disease for example or new antibiotics to keep us one step ahead of increasingly resistant infectious bacteria.
Protecting and conserving the natural Environment is one of Phoenix Adam’s core values”.
Alison Briggs from the Doncaster East IDB who commissioned the study said she was “impressed with the professionalism and competence of Phoenix Adam Ltd staff who delivered the project on
time and on budget”.

The project was delivered in conjunction with Peak Ecology Ltd. Haxey Grange Fen has been subject to a number of ecological surveys and monitoring since it was first notified in 1988 to help inform the condition of the SSSI.
Principal Ecologist, Jessica Eades reviewed all previous data, and liaised with Natural England to make appropriate habitat management recommendations to improve the biodiversity of the SSSI.
Jessica said she found it “a pleasure working with Phoenix Adam, another local firm with similar principals and goals to ourselves, such as delivering work on time and to a high standard. Peak Ecology look forward to working closely with them in the future to promote the importance of biodiversity”.
