The New EU Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
The EU’s Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) came into force on 18th July 2024 meaning the regulation is likely to have a hard implementation date of around January 2026.
Hailing from the bloc’s Circular Economy Action Plan of March 2020, this is perhaps its most ambitious sustainability regulation yet, its aim to make environmentally sustainable products the norm across the EU.
Overview
This regulation’s rules will eventually apply to all products placed on the EU market (very few exemptions), whether produced inside or outside the EU. However, given the complexity and international nature of UK exported goods, it is anticipated that this regulation will have profound impacts on GB exporters to the EU, particularly those early adopting sectors i.e. exporters of iron & steel, aluminium, textiles (both garments and footwear), furniture (including mattresses), tyres, detergents, paints, lubricants, chemicals, energy-related products (including new measures and revisions of existing ones) and ICT products, as well as other electronics.
With less than a year to prepare, it is essential that those GB businesses exporting to the EU gain an appreciation of the regulation’s scope and their compliance obligations to ensure they have adequate time to prepare, and their trade is uninterrupted.

This workshop is open to established enterprises located in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Receipt of this support is subject to the Subsidy Control Act (2022). To qualify an enterprise cannot have received more than £315,000 Minimal Financial Assistance (MFA) and or De Minimis within any three-year period.
This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
